The Scottsboro Boys description

Grab your tickets early so you don't miss this splendid show. Billed as 'fabulously well-performed' by the Mail on Sunday newspaper, it's already raising temperatures in London's theatreland.

It's an absolutely sensational musical which brings the remarkable true story of nine young men to the stage, for a court case that changed the course of US history. It won the 2013 Critics’ Circle Best Musical Award and was also nominated for six Oliviers including Best New Musical. And, as the final collaboration of the famous musical composition duo Kander and Ebb, well-loved for Chicago and Cabaret, it promises to be a genuine all-singing, all-dancing smash stage musical hit.

Metro magazine called it “extraordinary and unforgettableshocking, gripping, superbly staged, fabulously well-performed show”. Now, after a hit run at the Young Vic, it's playing at The Garrick Theatre.

What's it all about? This is a true story, centring on nine black boys who were pulled off a freight train in Scottsboro, Alabama, USA, during the famous depression in 1931. They were accused of rape by two white women and the authorities, shamefully racist at the time, tried and convicted them in record time, with very little ceremony. Thankfully a heated political campaign saved their lives and the four youngest men were eventually released from jail, completely innocent, a very long six years later.

The four freed young men joined a minstrel show, in a twist or irony that saw the first staging of the The Scottsboro Boys. The contemporary version is staged in much the same way as the original, now almost eighty years old, and is presented as a traditional minstrel show. The format lends significant irony to the production, which is already beautifully sharp and satirical.

Susan Stroman directs this very witty, clever, daring and compelling musical, a must-see show with a message. It has delighted audiences so far as well as giving the critics something really special to contend with, and we're fully expecting tickets to go like hot cakes.
